What is the difference between captive and independent insurance agents?
Captive Vs. Indy
A captive insurance agency represents one specific insurance company and can only offer products from that company. An independent insurance agency, on the other hand, represents multiple insurance companies and can offer a variety of products from different carriers.
Captive insurance agencies typically have a closer relationship with the carrier they represent, which can result in more favorable terms and pricing for their policyholders. However, they may not be able to offer as wide a range of products or as much flexibility in coverage as an independent agency.
Independent insurance agencies, on the other hand, have the ability to shop around for the best coverage and pricing from multiple carriers. They can offer more choices to customers and may be able to find specialized coverage that a captive agency cannot. But the tradeoff is that the agency may not have as close a relationship with any one carrier.
In summary, a captive insurance agency is only able to offer products from one specific carrier, whereas an independent agency can offer products from multiple carriers.
